I don't mean how much does it cost to buy the software, but how much does it cost to run?  I have read some topics that suggest 50 blogs per domain and each domain should be different ips/hosts. 

To get 1,000 blogs which my guess out be a pretty good blog farm (super new to this) you need
20 domains and 20 hosts.

$10 per domain and $50 per host comes out to $1000.

That is a pretty big chuck of change to build a blog farm.

It depends how you spread your blogs. You can have a multi C class IPs host instead of 20 hosts. That will out the host cost to maybe $100-$150 a month

The 20 domains will cost you like $200 a year.
